I don't know what caused me to crave a Sloppy Joe last week. Maybe I was just nostalgic for my childhood. Who knows, but they just sounded really good and my kids have always liked them. However, when I was a kid I wasn't a big fan of Sloppy Joe sandwiches. My experience with them was limited to the popular sloppy joe in a can or the school cafeteria. If you feel the same as I did about the lowly sloppy joe, this recipe will change your mind. It's a great weeknight meal for those busy evenings. For a variation sometimes I will use half BBQ sauce and half ketchup.
Sloppy Joes
2 pounds lean ground beef
1 medium onion, diced
1 green pepper, diced
2 cloves (1 teaspoon) garlic
1 1/2 cups ketchup
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 heaping tablespoon yellow mustard
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Buns for serving
Pickle slices for serving
In a large skillet, brown the ground beef. When the beef is almost done, add the onion, green pepper and garlic. Continue cooking for 5 minutes until the veggies are soft. Add the ketchup, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, kosher salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer, cover and cook for 15 minutes. Uncover and continue simmering for 5-10 more minutes. Spoon a generous amount on a toasted bun and top with pickle slices if desired.
Enjoy!

My family enjoys Sloppy Joes. I have never put brown sugar in them. Will have to give this a try.
